to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

the fourth hotflush release of 2017 comes from minneapolis-based dj and producer, tml. he made his debut in 2014 with one inch of water, an album in cassette form via always human tapes. his style takes cues from the bass and jungle halcyon days of yore, yet in his hands these influences are pestled into anything but nostalgia. no memory looks forward to a place where pigeonholes don’t exist, where past, present and future boil an amalgamated stew, where ‘experimental’ and ‘clubby’ aren’t effective antonyms. it’s an album in miniature - six tracks spanning a broad range. the unmistakable taste of jungle pervades side a, becoming increasingly less abstract as it goes: from the fractured opening of ‘face pads’, through the dub of ‘cold sleep’, to the sunrise head bang that is ‘crying’. side two moves inside. it’s darker there. the tunes - ’strainer’, ‘rhu’ and ‘code library’ - share a paredbackness. their beats look askance as they shuffle big and bold.

legendary dj daniele baldelli, who was resident at the infamous cosmic club on lake garda and pioneer of the cosmic sound, joins forces with italian maestro dj rocca and takes file under disco on a journey into outer disco space. famous as an extremely eclectic and open-minded dj, here baldelli transports this approach to the production of funkynoizer . and in the hands of a master producer like rocca the result is a track which fuses dub, afro, disco and electronic elements seamlessly into a tasty alternative discoid brew. remix action comes from brasilian duo selvagem (big fans of baldelli) whose reputation grows and grows with every spin of each record and every release that passes through their talented hands. here they dress the original in leopard skin pants and throw into into an all night, outdoor carnival party where anything goes. next up pete herbert & dicky trisco take the original on a heads down disco trip and work it to the bone. live driving bass, funky clav and a glorious piano line do a wonky waltz with the the afro dub essentials of the original. finally the man himself dj rocca treats us to a very classy disco-boogie version that would have rocked legendary parties back in the halcyon days of nyc disco

ever reliable canadian producer fred everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the lazy days label. on the a-side he s taking to crazy p s -like a fool- a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original s warm, disco-infused elements. on the flip, he takes on roach motel s -the night- and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. by way of variety the final track sees fred create a laid back balearic, auto-tuned version of franky selector s -wind swept dune-.

fuse bosses enzo siragusa and seb zito have been invited by the highly respected rawax to bring a taste of their beloved london rave culture roots to the labels first release of 2017. since their launch in 2011, rawax’s catalogue has beamed with nothing less than the finest, and enzo and seb are a welcomed addition to their already colourful and diverse roster. barac, boo williams, fred p, paul johnson, ricardo villalobos, ron trent and unbroken dub are just a small portion of an incredible list of artists that have released via the labels original monarch and many offshoots thus far. with ‘woonie trax’ enzo and seb perfectly resurrect the sounds of early uk rave culture into the present by digging out the early gems of their record boxes as inspiration. “barring the kicks, i think almost everything came from sampling old garage, hardcore and jungle records from the 90 s. for those in the know, the clues are in the names of the tracks”. – enzo siragusa whilst ‘shades of riddim, ‘lil ley’, and ‘blue notes’ all lend themselves to the early uk sound, each track has its own individual quirk making the ep a diverse representation of the days enzo and seb fell in love with rave.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.

for the labels ninth release, deep a & biris black crow records revisits one that helped establish the labels direction back in the imprints first year. bcr003, insular realms by fellow israeli producer hakimonu, was praised by many including resident advisor, who said the ep proved his off-kilter take on techno and house is as vibrant and inviting as ever. now in 2017, deepa & biri have invited mind against, luigi tozzi and echologist (aka dub techno veteran brendon moeller) to all rework the original version of insular realms for 2017. first up are life & death’s mind against, with one of the fognini brothers most direct techno productions yet, with a mid-track moment of calm before the intensity resumes. luigi tozzi, the rome-based producer who has had previous outings on dynamic reflection and dino sabatinis outis music, contributes the second remix. taking the lead from the originals more ethereal moments, his version is dreamy & almost wistful as it propels along its shaking rhythm. the b-side offers two takes from brendon moeller in his echologist guise, with a dub mix that twists the original into an acid-inflected track that slowly ratchets up the tension over its seven minutes, while the reshape breaks things down into a churning rhythm peppered with flashes f off kilter sonic details.

the latest outing on will & ink is a remix ep that finds parisian producers bambounou and simo cell team up for four reworked versions of yaleesa halls woodall lp. both artists are known for their releases on 50 weapons, livity sound and wisdom teeth. right here, on will & ink, two solo outings with another two collaborated remixes on the b-side showcase their dubbed out, stripped back and paranoid dark parisian trademark sound. their very specific sound sounds like little else and is a solid match with yaleesa hall and the amsterdam imprint as this ep proves.
